Chicago Fire begins tonight with Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) sits with Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney), explaining her actions or lack thereof. She admits she panicked when the Lt job came up as she is so invested in Girls on Fire. She is concerned that when she gets back on the “train” there won’t be time for anything but work.

She doesn’t feel she needs to lock her future down so tight yet. Severide is angry that she just stopped calling him as he didn’t know if she was okay or with someone else. She denies that, then admits she screwed up. She leans into him, saying she missed him and was excited to be with him and explain everything in person and she should have done it sooner. Kelly leans forward as she says she loves him with everything she has and that will never change. She rests on his shoulder as he remains mum.

Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith) talk about how excited Sylvie is about her new project but is sorry for bailing on Violet; they are interrupted when Stella walks into the firehouse, Everyone welcomes her back with hugs as Lt Jason Pelham (Brett Dalton) introduces himself and Stella welcomes him to 51.

Stella meets with Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker), saying she still wants to be a LT but she wants to slow things down. He respects her not rushing things as she has a long and important career in front of her and she cannot lose focus. The alarms sound and everyone heads out as Stella thanks the Chief for everything.

Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) walks with Boden and Randall “Mouch” McHolland (Christian Stolte) as they learn there is a huge pileup in a tunnel and one hell of a fire. Boden informs everyone what they are dealing with, orders barked out as more teams are called in. They enter the tunnel, shouting they are the fire department and for people to call out.

Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende) is helping collar people when they notice the flames are an odd color and realize they are dealing with a chemical fire. They have a potassium fire with enough propane to blow up the entire tunnel.

Mouch brings in the jaws of life, freeing patients inside vehicles. Severide is concerned that they just got an announcement of extinguishers coming from O’Hare; Severide feels that is too far out. They spot a person who Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri) checks on and they are clearly dead and burned but he spots the other CPD officer who refuses to move his spot.

Outside, Chief Walker is refusing to let people back into the tunnel until the extinguishers arrive. Stella and Jason are furious but walk away. Ritter tells them officer that the whistling is the propane tank and they need to leave. Pelham returns to the fire as Gallo and Stella have to stay back. Gallo takes off his protective gear and orders the officer to “move his ass.” They run as things begin to explode. The explosion causes several of the firefighters to be thrown through the air.

Ritter responds that he is okay and taking victim out as Walker demands information from Boden. Walker calls for an emergency evacuation and orders everyone out, something Boden defies him, Herrmann and Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) promise to stay as long as Chief does. Ritter tells Chief Walker there is a body that need to be recovered and he promises to do it when they can.

Boden is freaking out until Stella and crew arrive with the extinguishers; Herrmann falling to the ground to catch his breathe.

Walker confronts Boden about not following command, saying the promotion was a bad idea because now Boden has no adult supervision. Ritter hears how Shanks is yelling at Dillion, the CPD partner Ritter just saved. Herrmann spots Ritter, who insists he is good.

Cruz is walking with the crew, checking cars when he finds an aquarium, saying he isn’t safe there. Outside, Gallo and Mouch fondly welcome Kidd back, causing Pelham to smile. Cruz takes the aquarium with him to the firehouse and calls the preschool saying he has their crab and they should send someone over to pick it up. Capp hits Cruz, saying they were supposed to hit him if he ever was trying to work on getting Otis into a preschool again.

Ritter asks Mouch if he could find out if Dillion is from Trudy Platt’s (Amy Morton) precinct as he is concerned for him. Mouch says he will speak to his lady.

Pelham spots Stella kissing Severide on the forehead and follows her inside. He tells her she did a good job and he knows how close she is to everyone in 51 and wants to clear the air that he took this job from her. She says she stepped back and he didn’t take anything from her. She feels he is a good choice but she needs to see for herself.

Jessica comes to the Firehouse, where Capp gives her the crab. She thanks him, explaining that it was her car and she hated abandoning the crab. Joe comes out and she says they are both heroes to her and her class. Jessica asks Capp to bring the aquarium to her car, making Joe pause.

Stella admits she had fun but the truth is she got in her own head and stayed away too long. She hopes things are good between her and Severide. Sylvie knows what it is like to miss someone but says she is seeing Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) tomorrow and Stella gives her a hug to give to Matt.

Trudy arrives and informs Ritter that Dillion is out of another district but he put in his notice that morning about quitting the force, without explanation.

Severide joins Stella in the kitchen, who gives out several suggestions on what they could do. He thinks they should head over to Molly’s as everyone wants to see her and catch up. Stella was hinting at more private time but he pushes and she agrees.

Joe feels the guys have ruined his chances of getting Otis into the school, as Capp informs him that he is going out to dinner with Jessica tomorrow and he may be his way in. Joe warns him not to blow this. In the meantime, Sylvie talks to Violet about her trip. Violet has no idea who she is being stuck with as Sylvie reminds her that she will be so much happier when she gets back.

Ritter joins Gallo and Mouch at the bar, where they rave about Herrmann in the tunnel. Ritter receives a note and immediately jumps up, asking Mouch to contact Trudy to get Dillion’s address and text it to him. The note says, Thank you for risking your life for me. Sorry it was all for nothing!” Ritter runs out the door as Mouch calls Trudy.

Ritter quickly opens the building door and starts pounding on Tyler Dillion’s door. He is able to convince him to open the door as he spots clothing and bags of stuff on the floor. Ritter says he is not alone now and he will call 9-1-1 if it is necessary. Dillion thanks him for being a hero because Tyler definitely isn’t one. Ritter picks up his Academy picture and sits with him.

Dillion says he has wanted to be a cop since he could remember and when he saw something awful yesterday, he had to get dragged out of the tunnel; does that sound like a cop to him? He wanted to be a hero but turns out that is not who he is. Ritter shares about his first big fire and how he froze up when they needed him the most. He quit because he didn’t think he was cut out for the job and he never would have known he could do this if he wasn’t given the chance to find his footing.

Stell and Severide spend a leisurely morning in bed, Stella saying how much she missed the sex. She pushes him to respond and feels he is just saying it now. He squirms his way out of bed, saying he needs to hit the gym before shift. Stella is left in bed, frustrated with him.

Violet finds out that Chief Hawkins is her floater for the day. Gallo witnesses the exchange and questions Pelham why Evan is helping her out. Capp admits to Joe that he didn’t mention the baby at all on his first date, but will soon.

Chief Boden gives the play by play about the tunnel fire to the Chiefs. Don Kilbourne welcomes him and expresses his views on Jason Pelham being in his house. Boden says he vetted him and he gave him the spot. He is comfortable in his decision but is warned that he will come to regret it soon enough.

Ritter speaks to Mouch and Herrmann about Tyler, saying he had people believing in him and taking a chance on him. He admits Dillion doesn’t have anyone but an abusive partner who degrades him.

Gallo interrupts Violet who is showing Evana round; its clearly bothering him. Violet and Evan rush off to a call, where there was a problem with a water birth and the baby is not breathing. The midwife explains quickly that she wasn’t able to suction him before being in mom’s arms. The anxious parents await while Violet intubates the newborn. They are able to remove the green phlegm and he is breathing well on his own.

Mouch talks to Ritter, saying he knows someone who can possibly help him; same person who taught him about mentoring. Violet is told she is a talented medic from Evan, he admits she is also a lot of fun to be with.

Chief Boden stops Jason, saying Chief Killbourne came to see him and is not happy that he has given Pelham a home. Boden and Jason both hope this is not going to become a problem for them, bidding goodbye. Stella overhears the conversation.

Capp got Jessica’s information for Joe as Capp says that things did not go well and they should not mention Capp’s name. Trudy meets with Tyler, asking him what he wants and he tells all 3 of them he wants to be a cop. Trudy wants him transferred to her district, promising for a good partner and keep her eye on him. He smiles and says it sounds great; Ritter and Mouch smile at the exchange.

Stella greets Severide who came back from the Academy. She is happy they are having a night at home, questioning about Pelham. Severide says he is a good firefighter and if Boden thinks he is a good fit, that is good enough for him. Stella wants to know if they are okay as she feels him being distant. She feels there is more going on with him, thinking he might be disappointed she didn’t go for the Lt spot at the firehouse. He is proud of her but can’t get over how she went MIA on him and wonders if her being so scared about the future has to do with them getting married. She promises that he is the one thing she is sure about always. He wants to know if she still wants to marry him and she pauses, silent.
