Mary Jo Buttafuoco: The Long Island Lolita Incident

On May 19, 1992, Mary answered her door not knowing it would change her life forever. Jo was standing on her porch when she was shot in the face by Amy Fisher, her then-husband’s 17-year-old mistress. Amy didn’t threaten her or showed her the gun until she shot her. She fired a bullet that passed through her temple and left her in a pool of blood. Immediately, Mary was admitted to a hospital and she went into a coma for three days. The incident also left one side of her face paralyzed forever.

Joey, at first denied all the allegations of him having a relationship with Amy. However, he was found guilty and admitted to his sexual relationship with Fisher. He revealed that he started a relationship with Amy when she was still a minor which convicted him of raping a minor and planning a murder. He was sentenced to four months of imprisonment for charges of sodomy, statutory rape, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Amy was convicted of attempting murder and was sentenced to 7 years of jail time. She was released in 1999 on parole with the condition that she would never contact the family again.

Sixteen years after the Long Island Lolita incident, Mary Jo wrote a book telling her story titled, ‘Getting It Through My Thick Skull: Why I Stayed, What I Learned, and What Millions of People Involved with Sociopaths Need to Know. She got the inspiration to write the book after her own son started calling her ex-husband a sociopath.

The book describes everything about her life, not just focusing on her shooting. Also, she describes how she felt manipulated to stay with a sociopath. Critics labeled the book ‘strangely compelling’, and also said that ‘Readers will want to know – why she stayed with him?’

Mary used her story to raise awareness about facial paralysis. To spread awareness about this and other topics like mental health and recovery/addiction, she made appearances on a number of TV Shows.
