The L Word is coming back to Showtime and several of the original stars are bringing their characters back to life. Not only will the reboot bring back Jennifer Beals (Bette Porter), Katherine “Kate” Moennig (Shane McCutcheon), and Leisha Hailey (Alice Pieszecki), show creator Ilene Chaiken is back at the helm. The L Word is a Primetime Emmy nominated series and received special recognition from GLAAD and was revered for introducing audiences to in-depth and complex lesbian characters.

The show premiered on Showtime on January 18, 2004, and had a long run, concluding with the final episode “Last Word” on March 8, 2009. With six seasons, the L Word will return sometime in 2019 and is set for an eight-episode run. Though not definitive, some other popular characters from the series may return.

Just as the L Word introduced straight America to some of the issues lesbian women face, it’s expected the show will continue in the same vein. A decade later, the nation has undergone significant changes in the homosexual community and while many breakthroughs have been achieved, the threat of setbacks is very real.

While the show has an established fan base that will tune in, a new, younger generation that has grown up under President Obama will have a different response to the L Word and it’s going to be intriguing to see their reaction.

As you may expect, Ilene Chaiken and several cast members are sharing their excitement about the reboot on their official social media accounts. Showtime issued a press release that you may see in the link below.

Showtime has kept Kate Moennig busy as she followed the L Word with an episode of Dexter then joined the cast of Ray Donovan. Jennifer Beals followed the L Word with several movies and television series including Lauren, Proof, The Night Shift, The Last Tycoon, and Taken.

Leisha Hailey has been busy as well with roles in Silicon Valley, Bosch, American Dad, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

Judging by the social media reaction to the announcement, people are ready for the reboot and thrilled to see the new direction the show will take.
