Where do Central Maui diners go for sizzling steak bites, crunchy mandoo with sauce, fat Noda’s chow funn noodles and aromatic shrimp fried rice? Tiffany’s Bar & Grill, of course.

It’s a gem of a restaurant situated at 1424 Lower Main St. in Wailuku. At last count, there were 96 dishes on the popular menu and the ambience is fun.

High ceilings are painted black, a long bar is a gathering hot spot and numerous joiner tables and booths take up the large dining room. Sports on flatscreens may be viewed from every angle.

“We’ve been here for 13 years and we are always trying to improve the menu,” says Diane Orite, who owns and operates the bar and restaurant with her husband, Howard, who hails from the old Noda’s Market in Kahului.

That’s where the recipe for the fabulously fat chow funn noodles comes from and each portion, single or half pan, is seasoned just right with green and round onions, ground beef, bean sprouts and more.

But that’s a staple. Lately, they’ve added hamburgers and cheeseburgers, far removed from their typical all-day Asian menu full of Filipino vegetable lumpia, Korean bi bim bap in a clay pot, Chinese honey-walnut shrimp and Japanese mochiko chicken and shrimp tempura.

“I wasn’t sure about the hamburgers and the cheeseburgers, but they are doing really well,” says Diane. “Our oxtail soup is a big seller. It’s rich with the bone marrow and we skim all the fat and add peanuts, star anise, mushrooms, baby corn and you add ginger and green onions.”

Miso butterfish arrives sizzling on a large platter to your table with two or three hefty pieces. “It’s a very big portion for the price,” says Diane. “We also have kim-chee fried rice, kim-chee soup and kim-chee sides. Kim chee is an art.”

Happy hour runs daily from 4 to 6 p.m. Beer and well drinks are discounted. Pupu are $2 to $3.50. The list includes eight pieces mandoo, chips and salsa, egg rolls, cold tofu, soybeans and garlic bread.

Tuesdays, live music gets the crowd in high gear from 7 to 9 p.m. Raspberry and dragonfruit mojitos have been recent drink specials.

Tiffany’s opens at 10:30 a.m. daily and the kitchen closes at 11:45 p.m. Bartenders can stay open until 2 a.m. Reservations are taken for seating after 8 p.m. only.
